When I first began writing works for children, I decided to illustrate the works myself. Without any formal education in the visual arts, other than required art classes in my public school education, my initial endeavors were rough. The pictures on the page scarcely matched those in my mind's eye. Needless to say a great many hours were spent learning to draw, sketch, and paint.​Those hours of practice provided an opportunity for me to grow as an artist, moving into visual works beyond illustrations for my books. To the right is a shot of a collection of works I hung on the wall in my office. Although I placed them there for my comfort, many of my colleagues commented about them.
